NABH released the 1st Edition, which it called India's first digital health standards for hospitals, on 17 September 2023. The 2nd Edition trimmed the standards to eight chapters (three clinical, five non-clinical) and 182 objective elements, and graded them Core, Commitment, Achievement and Excellence, as in NABH's 5th and 6th Edition hospital standards.
The eight chapters
| Chapter | Standards | Elements | Core | Commitment | Achievement | Excellence |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Access, Assessment and Continuity of Care (AAC) | 8 | 40 | 3 | 17 | 13 | 7 |
| Care of Patients (COP) | 9 | 41 | 0 | 8 | 19 | 14 |
| Management of Medication (MOM) | 4 | 13 | 2 | 6 | 3 | 2 |
| Digital Infrastructure (DIS) | 2 | 14 | 2 | 2 | 5 | 5 |
| Digital Operations Management (DOM) | 6 | 25 | 6 | 4 | 8 | 7 |
| Finance and Procurement Management (FPM) | 3 | 17 | 3 | 9 | 1 | 4 |
| Human Resource Management (HRM) | 4 | 14 | 0 | 2 | 4 | 8 |
| Information Management System (IMS) | 2 | 18 | 1 | 9 | 0 | 8 |
| Total | 38 | 182 | 17 | 57 | 53 | 55 |
NABH says the elements apply to every kind of hospital regardless of size, location, ownership or specialty. The certification programme describes the scope as the hospital information system, cybersecurity, telemedicine, patient data privacy and digital consent, aligned with the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM). One example from the clinical chapters: the hospital captures the patient's ABHA number and links it to its own unique patient identifier.
Silver, Gold and Platinum
A hospital applies for the level its self-assessment supports, and only the elements for that level are evaluated.
| Level | Core | Commitment | Achievement | Excellence |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| First assessment | ||||
| Silver | 100% | 60% | — | — |
| Gold | 100% | 60% | 60% | — |
| Platinum | 100% | 60% | 60% | 60% |
| Surveillance at 24 months | ||||
| Silver | 100% | 80% | — | — |
| Gold | 100% | 80% | 80% | — |
| Platinum | 100% | 80% | 80% | 80% |
Each applicable element is scored 0, 5 or 10, and services the hospital does not provide (a blood centre in a small hospital, for example) are marked not applicable. The hospital gets 90 days after the first assessment, and again after surveillance, to close non-compliances.
Accreditation or certification?
| Accreditation | Certification | |
|---|---|---|
| Levels | Silver, Gold or Platinum | Silver only |
| Validity | 4 years | 2 years |
| Mid-term check | Assessment at 24 months | None |
| Afterwards | Apply for full accreditation again after 4 years | Re-apply for certification after 2 years |
NABH presents certification as the way to "start on the digital maturity roadmap", and encourages hospitals to move to the next level when they renew. Under the 2nd Edition notes, allopathic multispecialty and single-specialty hospitals, day-care allopathic clinics, eye hospitals, dental hospitals and AYUSH hospitals can all apply. A provider that takes accreditation without already holding NABH hospital, SHCO, dental, AYUSH or eye care accreditation must apply for one of those programmes during the third year of its digital accreditation.

How to prepare
- Download the free version of the 2nd Edition guidebook and NABH's digital toolkit, and score your hospital honestly against the 17 Core elements first: a single Core gap blocks every level.
- Decide the realistic level. Most small and mid-sized hospitals should aim for Silver and plan a move to Gold at renewal.
- Map each element to the module of your hospital software that meets it. If your vendor's product is certified under NABH's separate standards for HIS/EMR or clinic management software, ask for the mapping.
- Close the policy gaps that software alone cannot: access control, backups, downtime procedures, data privacy and digital consent.
- Train staff, because assessors check that the system is used, not just installed.
Digital records also make the hospital standards easier: the IMS chapter guide explains what NABH's 6th Edition expects of medical records and information management.
Frequently asked questions
What are the NABH Digital Health Standards?
They are NABH's standards for the safe and effective use of digital systems in hospitals. The 2nd Edition (September 2025) has eight chapters: Access, Assessment and Continuity of Care; Care of Patients; Management of Medication; Digital Infrastructure; Digital Operations Management; Finance and Procurement Management; Human Resource Management; and Information Management System. NABH publishes a free version of the guidebook, with its key performance indicators, on its website.
What is the difference between Silver, Gold and Platinum?
They are levels of digital maturity. At the first assessment, Silver requires 100% of the Core objective elements and 60% of Commitment; Gold also requires 60% of Achievement; Platinum also requires 60% of Excellence. At the surveillance assessment after 24 months the Commitment, Achievement and Excellence thresholds rise to 80%.
Can a hospital without NABH accreditation apply for Digital Health?
Yes. NABH's programme pages open both the accreditation and the certification to any healthcare provider with an in-patient or day-care set-up. A provider that takes Digital Health accreditation without already holding NABH hospital, SHCO, dental, AYUSH or eye care accreditation must apply for one of those programmes during the third year of its digital accreditation.
How much does NABH Digital Health accreditation cost?
For the four-year accreditation, NABH lists a one-time application fee of ₹10,000 to ₹30,000 and an annual fee that depends on beds and level: for example ₹20,000 a year for Silver up to 50 beds, ₹30,000 for Gold and ₹37,500 for Platinum. The two-year Silver certification lists ₹10,000 to ₹50,000 by bed size. GST of 18% applies.
How are the Digital Health objective elements scored?
Each applicable element is scored 0 (not met), 5 (partially met) or 10 (fully met). Elements for services the hospital does not provide are marked not applicable. The score in each category is the total obtained divided by the highest possible score, and it must meet that category's threshold for the level applied for. Hospitals get 90 days to close non-compliances after each assessment.
