Registration or licence?
AERB grades its approvals by hazard, from a licence for the highest-hazard sources to a registration for the lowest:
| Equipment | AERB consent |
|---|---|
| Medical diagnostic X-ray (fixed, mobile, dental, OPG) | Registration |
| Computed tomography (CT) | Licence |
| Interventional radiology X-ray (cath lab, C-arm used for interventions) | Licence |
| Deep, superficial and contact therapy X-ray | Authorisation |
Design and type approval of equipment is the manufacturer's or supplier's responsibility, so buy only type-approved units.
How the eLORA process works
- Institution registration on eLORA; AERB reviews it and sends login credentials to the registered email.
- Radiation professionals register separately, receive an RP ID and are linked to your institution.
- Apply for consent for each unit, with layout, shielding and equipment details.
- Track and renew online — eLORA handles the whole consenting process, including renewal.
What NABH and empanelment inspectors look for
- Valid AERB registration or licence for every unit, matching the equipment actually installed
- Shielding as per the approved layout, warning lights and signage
- Lead aprons, thyroid collars and gonad shields, checked periodically
- Personnel monitoring for radiation workers where required
- Quality assurance records for the equipment
We handle eLORA registration for hospitals, diagnostic centres and dental clinics and keep renewals on your licence calendar.
Frequently asked questions
Does a dental X-ray need an AERB licence?
Dental X-ray units, like other medical diagnostic X-ray equipment, must be approved by AERB through its eLORA portal before use; diagnostic X-ray equipment falls under AERB's registration category. NABH assessors check this for every dental clinic with an X-ray or OPG.
What is the difference between AERB registration and licence?
AERB grades consent by hazard. Lower-hazard medical diagnostic X-ray equipment needs a registration, while higher-hazard equipment such as CT and interventional radiology units needs a licence.
How do I apply for AERB approval?
The institution first registers on AERB's eLORA portal; once approved, it receives login credentials. Radiation professionals register separately and are linked to the institution, and the facility then applies for the consent each piece of equipment needs. Renewals are also online.
